• Two Alumni honored by Iota Alumni Association

  At this past weekends Iota Alumni Association reunion two Alumni were honored.  Congratulations to Nu Alumni Scott Cranston for being honored with the “Triple crown” award and Iota Alumni Ray Taylor with the “Crow’s nest” award.  Brother Cranston has opened his home and property to both the Kappa Delta Phi Alumni Brothers and Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Sisters for 3 years running for the Summer re-union.

  It’s been a decade since we lost Brother Scott C. Tannian of Iota Chapter, University of Southern Maine, Kappa Delta Phi.  He touched many a brothers life and is missed by Iota Chapter as well as all of Kappa Delta Phi.

  Iota Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi National Fraternity at University of Southern Maine was founded on May 7th, 1938. The chapter is currently in good standing and continues to exemplifies the best of the core values of Kappa Delta Phi.

  The following was published in the 1950 anniversary book.

  Iota Chapter had a fine start as a fraternity because it was a local Fraternity for nearly fifteen years before becoming a member of the National Organization. With the change over at Gorham from a Normal School to a Teachers College and the increased male enrollment, Iota grew into one of the strongest fraternities on the campus. Today, twenty-two years after its start, it is the strongest fraternity on the hill. Iota continued with its activities, such as the annual Kappa Kabret, Freshman smokers, Freshman Week Tea Dance, and the annual banquet for the incoming members and the graduating seniors.

  In 1952 the Brothers of Iota Chapter constructed an outdoor skating rink, which is the pride and joy of the Brothers and the college. This rink also serves the Gorham Community and provides much pleasure for the local children. Once the rink is set up every year the work has just started. There is snow to shovel, Hooding to l,e done, and the scraping of the ice to give it a smooth, even surface. This is our biggest annual affair.

  In the years 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953 Iota Chapter won the President’s Cup at the National Convention.

  In 1951 Iota was proud to have one of its members elected as the National President, Mr. James Bowman, a member of the faculty of Gorham State Teacher College and head of the Psychology Department.

  In 1956, 1957 and 1958 Iota won the Balfour Scholarship Award at the National Convention.

  In 1959, 1960, and 1961 Iota won the National sponsored Educational Display Award.

  The year of 1960, Iota gained the position of being the number one fraternity on the hill. In the fall James “Skoogy” Skougland won the mayor’s campaign, a position which Iota hasn’t held for a number of years.

  Iota presented in 1962, two new basketball awards at Gorham State Teachers College. First, the Francis L. Bailey Award, consisting of a trophy presented to the winning team ,. of the Gorham-Farmington game. The first team to win three consecutive games at Gorham, will become the sole possessor of the award. A second trophy, the Kappa Delta Phi Most Valuable Player Award, was awarded to the player who displayed superiority in rebounding, team work, scoring, and good competitive sportsmanship. This trophy will also be presented each year.

• Kappa Iota chapter of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Wins peta2 Award For Holding Fur-Free Formal

  Portland, Maine — For the 100 percent fur-free formal that they held on April 25, the women of the University of Southern Maine’s Kappa Iota chapter of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, Inc., have received a Compassionate Chapter Award from peta2, the world’s largest youth animal rights organization. Kappa Iota member Casey Webster and her 13 sorority sisters wore peta2′s anti-fur buttons to the formal and posed for a group photo behind a banner that read, “Fur-Free Formal 2009!”

  “Every woman wants to look her best for the spring formal, but the Kappa Iota sisters’ compassion makes them radiantly beautiful,” says peta2 college campaign coordinator Ryan Huling. “By making their biggest social affair of the year fur-free, these women showed that a killer look doesn’t mean killing animals.”

  The members of Kappa Iota have received a framed certificate and a thank-you card signed by peta2 staffers.

• Kappa Delta Phi NAS Sister Tara O’Donohue – Hockey Face-off Against Breast Cancer

  Tara O’Donohue, Alumnus of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, Kappa Iota Chapter at University of Southern Maine is playing in a hockey tournament on Jan. 24-25 to benefit the Cancer Patient Support Program’s Emergency Fund. The fund helps breast cancer patients in the state of Vermont with all kinds of things, such as: transportation costs, lodging during treatment, COBRA payments, medical supplies not covered by insurance, etc.

  We know during these economic times money is tight but we are hoping we could count on my Brothers and Sisters for donations for this event! It doesn’t matter how much or how little every penny goes a long way!!

  Brother Bill Diamond is running for re-election in the Maine State Senate.

  Brother Diamond has lived in Windham, Maine for over 30 years. During that time, he has had a very distinguished career in public service and in his professional career.

  From 1989 to 1997, Diamond served as Maine Secretary of State. However, prior to his tenure as Secretary of State, Diamond served for three terms in the Maine House of Representatives. In addition to his service in the House, Bill also served two terms in the Maine State Senate.

  For more than 20 years, Bill Diamond has also been a small business owner. He was also a teacher and principal in the Windham school system for 18 years. In addition to teaching, Diamond served as the interim superintendent of schools for Raymond.

  Diamond also served as a well-respected advocate and lobbyist for eight years, and was Director of Governmental Relations for the Elan Corporation. Diamond has been married to his wife for Jane for 38 years and they are the proud parents of two adult daughters and five grandchildren.

  Senator Bill Diamond is currently the Senate Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and a member of the Transportation Committee.
