On April 11th, 2009, Kappa Delta Phi and Kappa Delta Phi NAS celebrated the new sister colony of Kappa Alpha Alpha chapter and new brothers of Alpha Alpha Chapter of the University of Maine at Orono.

Around thirty people were in attendance to welcome in eight new sisters of Kappa Delta Phi NAS, and three new brothers of Kappa Delta Phi. Sisters and one alumni brother from local, and not so local, chapters were also in attendance for the evening which included a catered dinner and a dance. Attendance was slightly hindered due to the holiday weekend, and many brothers and sisters sent their regrets, but the overall spirit of the evening was not affected. Jim Joy, of Eta chapter, came to see his little brother, and meet the new brothers and sisters. Joining to celebrate the new sister colony was Taryn Beaumont, of Kappa Lambda, Sam White, of Kappa Mu, and Mandy Whittier, of Kappa Upsilon, a member of the sister’s National Board who helped in the education process for KAA. All of the Alpha Alpha brothers were in attendance, along with a few of their alumni. New brothers Dave Ouellette, Zachary Chase and Chris Dunbar were formally introduced, as well as the new executive board. Seven of the eight new KAA sisters were able be there, including Hannah Horecka, Stephanie Guillemette, Kayla Smith , Jenny Cohen, Ashley Callan, Kasey Fitch, Taryn Denoncour (Katie Ramirez was unable to attend.) In the future there will be many great things to read about from this amazing group of brothers and sisters, who truly represent the best Kappa has to offer.

On Monday April 20th Alpha Alpha brothers Dustin Morgan, David Ouellette, Tyler Sivik, Seth Warren, Zack Chase, Chris Dunbar, Mitchell Slevinsky and Philip Hodgdon all volunteered in the Umaine Orono Recreational Center for the Red Cross Blood Drive. Several brothers also signed up for and were tested for Bone Marrow Transplant compatibility. If matches are found in any of the brothers they will be given the opportunity to donate Bone Marrow to an individual in need and the opportunity to save a life.

    Alpha Alpha Relay for Life

On Friday April 17 Alpha Alpha brothers Seth Warren and Ryan Barnes both took turns walking from roughly 3pm till 10am the following Saturday morning to promote Cancer Awarness in the University of Maine at Orono Field House. Although both suffered sleep deprivation and several blisters on their feet the cause was more than worth the effort.

Brother Ryan Barnes has publicly announced his declaration of candidacy.

Below is my letter of intent, as submitted at this past P/T meeting in person to several members of the Board. This is for your consideration and in hopes for your support at the upcoming Convention.

    National Board Members
    Kappa Delta Phi Inc.

Esteemed members of the Board of Directors,

I, Ryan Barnes, do hereby disclose to you my intent for wishing to join the National Board of Kappa Delta Phi Inc. National Fraternity.

I have achieved grand things with the aid of my Brothers of Alpha Alpha Chapter, currently at a flagship University and still growing; always fostering the ideals of Kappa, of Delta, and of Phi. Some of these accomplishments have been bringing the Brotherhood over twelve members strong, which is higher than half of other active Chapters at this present point in time. Alpha Alpha Chapter has also been one of the highest academic Fraternities on campus for the last two years, never falling below the top four out of sixteen other such organizations while also beating the all Fraternity and all campus GPAs. We have also dedicated hundreds of hours to community service and raised money for several charitable organizations throughout Bangor, Old Town, and Orono. We at Alpha Alpha Chapter truly strive to be a shining star for Kappa Delta Phi National Fraternity here at the University of Maine as well as amongst Brothers and Sisters alike.
I am filled with nothing but pride for these men at Alpha Alpha Chapter, they consistently astonish me with their actions as a Brotherhood, never forgetting the pledge they took and the ideals they stand for. Truly they are to be commended on their efforts, and I, like them, too believe that I can contribute and aid this Fraternity – perhaps no longer at a local level, but now at a national level.

Because of the opportunities given me by this Fraternity, I would like to participate in a more active roll within the Fraternity as a whole and help shape the future for men who are entering institutions of higher learning so that others who follow in my footsteps may too have the same guidance and tutelage that I had once received.

It is one thing to sit on the sidelines and criticize; I’d like to see more action and fewer words through an active roll on the National Board of Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity, allowing my abilities to be put to use for the betterment of this Fraternity and its Brothers.

    Best Wishes and MTSND,
    Ryan K. Barnes

On October 13th, 2008. Alpha Alpha Chapter volunteered time and knowledge at the annual Children’s Water Festival at the University of Maine at Orono.

The Brothers not only provided guidance around the campus for the activities throughout the day, but also offered some insight for the activities in which they were involved with. The activities were primarily based upon the children’s knowledge of water, ecosystems, and the effects that humans have on the environment.

The children were delighted to have the Brothers as their guides, asking many questions about college life and other topics of interest throughout the day.

The Brothers were thanked and welcomed back for next year’s Water Festival, in hopes that they would again contribute their time to furthering the education of Maine’s youth.

On April 30th at the University of Maine at Orono, two teams composed of Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity, Alpha Alpha Chapter Brothers competed in the Tippman ROTC Paintball Tournament. Against 18 other teams, including one team containing another brother, the two teams were able to place 15th (Black Team) and 4th (Gold Team). The winning team, Super Squad, contained Mu Alum and Alpha Alpha Active Ryan Barnes, who’s jersey never saw a drop of paint until the Alpha Alpha men smashed some on it after he took first place.

Over all the Kappa boys outlasted all competition, of the 3 teams finishing ahead of Gold Team two contained former and current Semi-Professional players and the third was a military ensemble from the Army ROTC. One player on Gold Team had never fired a Paint Ball Gun before in his life, proving again that when called upon to step up and meet a challenge, Kappa Delta Phi prevails.

On Sunday, April 27, 2008, two Bangor area chapters participated in the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Walk, held at the Bangor Mall. Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, Kappa Lambda Chapter of Husson College, and Kappa Delta Phi National Fraternity, Alpha Alpha chapter of the University of Maine showed their support by raising funds and awareness, and by participating in the walk around the mall.

The MDA serves people in the community with neuromuscular diseases by providing clinics, support groups, assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs, braces and communication devices, as well as summer camp for kids. MDA also funds research seeking treatments and cures for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases that affect people of all ages, right here in our community.

Over $2000 total was raised for this event. A great time was had by all, and it was a great chance for brothers and sisters to come together for a great cause.
