| On March 28th 2008 Kappa Delta Phi Brothers and Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Sisters met in Portland Maine to perform community service and for a social meeting.
Chapters represented
We met at couple of locations and then trekked to Chi chapter alumnus, David Jones. Dave Jones was seriously injured a year ago during a skiing accident, but due to his perseverance he has made incredible strides in recovery. This is not surprising as that he has been described as Captain America by his Chi Chapter alumni. Kappa Chi Alumnus Sister Jill Bivona arranged the community service for Brother Dave Jones. They knew each other during their active days when Dave was an active Brother of Chi chapter and Jill was an active Sister of Kappa Chi, located at Southern New Hampshire University. The crew of Kappa Delta Phi Alumni Brothers, Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Alumnae Sisters and Active Brothers from our UMaine Colony helped Dave clean sweep his basement, handle some over growth in his yard, and clean swept the upstairs of his house. While Brother Scott Moody (Xi chapter) and Sister Nicola Reis-Sedgwick (Kappa Chi Chapter) whipped up some serious grub for the hard working teams. Brother Vinnie DeMambro (Eta Chapter) was the brother of the day, installing two sets of banisters and re-doing an exterior wall and other construction around the house, Brother DeMambro operates a construction company located in Bar Harbor, Maine. The active brothers of Alpha Alpha colony (with a little help and supervision from alumni brothers from a couple of different chapters) were set to some serious lifting, carrying a lot of heavy weight from the basement to the pickup trucks making runs to the local dump. Brother Scott Cranston (Nu Chapter) was the master of yard shrubbery and tackled some serious overgrowth. We are happy to report Scott still has all of his digits and did one heck of a job. The alumna Sisters from Kappa Chi, Kappa Iota and Kappa Eta turned their critical eye to the overflowing wardrobe of Dave Jones and performed a “what not to wear” episode before our very eyes. Once the “what not to wear” episode was over they changed channels to “Flip this house” and they transformed the upstairs into an area any top notch bed and breakfast would be proud to own. Yard work, Basement and Upstairs transformations and construction being completed we turned our attentions to the food and to wishing Alumni Sister Victoria DeMambro (Kappa Eta) a very happy birthday. We then broke camp for the day and returned to our assorted hotel rooms to rest and get ready for the evening social. Kappa Eta Sister Jennifer D’Appollonio secured our evening social at Foreplay Sports Bar in Portland Maine. The Owner of Foreplay Sports Bar is married to Kappa Iota Alumni Sister Chandra Palian. They were extremely gracious hosts to us closing off the upper level for our social. |

Kappa Delta Phi Brother and American Army Soldier, Geoffrey Carmichael.
This month’s Spotlight on a Kappa is on Geoffrey Carmichael. He is an alumni Brother of the Nu Chapter from Thomas College, Waterville, Maine. His hometown is in Sanford, Maine but now resides in Steilacoom, Washington with his wife Camilla of 1 year. He is a medical lab technician stationed at Fort Lewis with the 47th Combat Support Hospital. He also does church ministry and missionary work at McNeil Island Corrections Center on Sunday evenings. His wife, Camilla, is also in the Army and is a supply specialist and has been in Iraq since last September, but will be coming back within the month. Geoff is expecting to be heading out to Iraq in late 2008.
Geoffrey pledge in the fall of 2003 and was active until he graduated from Thomas College in May 2006. He believes that Kappa chose him because the brothers showed a lot of interest in him, seeing the potential leader he would blossom into being. They didn’t know who the real Geoffrey was until after the interview process. While he was active, he held the position of pledge master and the philanthropy chairman. Geoffrey was also on the Thomas College Lacrosse Team, the college republicans as well as several other organizations on campus. He hasn’t been to a convention yet, but did go to the President Treasurer’s Meeting in the fall of 2004.
Being in Kappa and going through pledging helped him get through basic training. He had two similar situations where a girlfriend broke up with him during pledging for Kappa Delta Phi and another girlfriend broke up with him during basic training. Geoffrey said, “The hardest part in training and pledging was just going through the process and the emotional attachment to someone. The hardships you go through and the bonds you make were most important and the trust that you build with the other comrades.” After Kappa, he had a really life changing experience at his job. It happened at his first autopsy and he realized the full value of life.
Some of the many Kappa past times that people have are just being with their brothers and sisters, Geoffrey loved late night Kappa chants before quiet hours at school and getting together with alumni such at Scott Cranston, Ken Holman and David Alberico. Many brothers and sisters have changed our lives in some way, even if they are a small way. David Alberico is one of those brothers that changed Geoffrey’s life. David met Geoffrey’s mother and made a great lasting impression of a classy gentleman. Cherry Drew is a sister that showed Geoffrey the meaning of having a good time with other Kappa Brothers. Geoffrey tries his best by staying in touch with the actives from Nu Chapter and helps them out if it is financial or even just some brotherly advice.
Something that most people don’t know about Geoffrey is that he is training for a marathon right now and has about 20 pairs of running shoes. I don’t know what obsessive is but that seems like a lot! He loves cookies, doesn’t drink any alcohol, doesn’t smoke and is also an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Saints. I asked Geoffrey what the top three things he wants to do before he got too old. He replied with running ten marathons; after he retires, he wants to go on a church mission with his wife because he didn’t get to do it because of the military and he is married; and to win the Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest by trying to eat 58 hot dogs.

Brother Carmichael received his degree and then felt a calling to serve his nation in the US Army. He is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He is a Medical Lab Technician. He like many of out other graduates are making Kappa Delta Phi proud with their service to Nation.
LEWISTON – Dennis Andrew Counemanche, 60, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, at his home in his sunroom, surrounded by his family, after courageously battling leukemia (AML) for the past seven months.
He was born on Aug. 1, 1946, in Lewiston, to Fernand and Irene (Rancourt) Courtemanche. A graduate of St. Dominic High School in 1965, he further pursued his education at Thomas College, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1970. On June 20 of the same year, he married his one and only sweetheart, Cecilia (Grenier) Courtemanche. A dedicated worker, he worked for more than 36 years as a revenue agent for the Internal Revenue Service.
He was an active member of St. Philip’s Parish for many years, serving as a eucharistic minister, chairman of the finance committee, member of the liturgy committee and also worked on the capital campaign. He was also a member of the Knights of CoIumbus and served for many years as a member of the Army Reserves.
While attending Thomas College, he became a brother of the Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity. He served Maine Family Federal Credit Union as a volunteer for 20 years. He was a member of the supervisory committee from 1982 until 1992, when he was elected to the board of directors. He provided dedicated leadership as chairman of the board of directors from 1992 until 2002.
An avid golfer, he was an active and competitive member of the Agren Appliance Golf League at the Prospect Hill Golf Course, Additional hobbies included gardening, puttering in the garage and around the house and yard and, most recently, puzzling. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.
He was a loving, caring, husband, father of four and proud granparent of five grandchildren.
For him, family came first. Ever the giver, he was constantly busy assisting family and friends with everything from moving, to household maintenance. Helping was not considered a chore; he was happy to oblige. As he always said, “This is what families do.” He was more than just a husband, father and pepire; he was a friend to everyone he met. Although he never liked to draw attention to himself and preferred to blend into the crowd, people were somehow always drawn to him. He always had a sparkle in his teasing eyes and an infectious dimpled smile. He was lots of fun to be around, was extremely logical, a fantastic listener, gave great advice, had a hugely positive outlook on life, was widely respected and had a relaxed, calming presence about him. He was extremely strong in mind, body and spirit. He was a fantastic husband, father, brother to nine siblings, all to whom he felt extremely close.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Cecilia (Grenier) Courtemanche of Lewiston; and their four children, Aimee (Courtemanche) Adams, and husband, Michael Adams, of Lewiston, Denise (Courtemanche) Wills, and husband, David Wills, of Hastings-on-Husdon, N.Y. and Joseph Courtemanche of Lewiston; five loving grandchildren, Devin, Lindsey, Marshal, Holden and Jack; nine brothers and sisters, Donald Courtemanche, and wife, Linda, of Nashua, N.H., Richard Courtemanche, and wife, Diane, of Lewiston, Claire
Tennyson, of Greene, Roland Courtemanche, and wife, Helga, of Nashua, N.H., Doris Maheu, and husband, Claude, of Greene, Robert Courtemanche, and wife, Claire, of Sabattus, Gile Courtemanche, and wife, Linda, of Greene, Linda Ray, and husband, Randall, of Greene and Paul Courtemanche, and wife, Louise, of Auburn; his wife’s brothers and sister, Leon Grenier of Lewiston, Willie Grenier, and wife, Janice, of Waterville, Marie Marquis, and Husband, Gaetan, of Lewiston and Miche DuGren, and life partner, Bert Duran, of Lewiston; along with a multitude of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Fernand and Irene (Rancourt) Courtemanche; and brothers-in-law, Charles Tennyson and Andre Grenier.
The family especially wishes to thank Dr. Martha Wadleigh, Dr. Vincent ho and Mary Lou Hackett, social worker, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, as well as the staff of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dr. Nicholette Erickson of CMMC.
