    Celebrating 40 Years of Sisterhood

    by
Sister Lauren Gardner, Kappa Sigma Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi NAS, SPring 1995

    for the Orderofthecrow.org

Pledging Kappa Sigma 14 years ago was one of the best things I ever did. I have met some of the most interesting and loveliest women on the planet. Our sorority has women of all different backgrounds, colors, shapes, sizes, you name it. Although we are all unique in our own way, we still have our sorority in common. I am so proud of our organization, and was therefore really excited when we had the chance to celebrate at our 40th Anniversary party.

Taking place on September 26th at the Highlander Inn in “Manchegas” (aka Manchester, NH) at 7 pm, sisters in their 20’s up into their 60’s all co-mingled and reminisced. It was such a memorable evening. A slide show played for the duration, and a DJ played hits old and new. There was a raffle to help the actives as well as charity. Yellow roses were given to the oldest and youngest sister in attendance, as well as who traveled the farthest. It was like being at a wedding reception- there was dancing and joking, and for most of us, it was just like old times and we had never skipped a beat. The party ended at midnight, but unofficially carried on until the wee hours in true-Kappa fashion.

For those who couldn’t make the event, they were very much missed. About 60-some odd sisters (and some men scattered here and there) were in attendance, but over the years almost four hundred women have passed through the doors…that’s a lot of sisters! We had such a great time with all of our sisters and look forward to our next reunion during Homecoming/Alumni Day in October.

This was a poem that I wrote and framed to give at the raffle…I think it sums up what all of us feel being part of Kappa:

    Kappa Sigma Phi 40th Anniversary

Kappa’s celebrating 40 years? “Holy Crow!”

Where did all the time seem to go?

We’ve grown up through laughter, tears and smiles

Being a sister has made our lives more worthwhile

We remember the meaning behind black and gold

Let’s toast to our sisters, both the young and the old

Each and every time we see a single yellow rose

Our hearts swell inside with pride inside, because we know-

Sisterhood is the bond that brought us all together

May The Spirit Never Die; may we live on forever!

    -Lauren Gardner, Spring ‘95

Kappa Eta Sister Polly Tobin Goddard just opened Bum Boosa™.

Bamboo Baby Products is a company creating and producing environmentally friendly baby products made with the planet and babies’ sensitive skin in mind.

Their first product is currently hitting natural food store shelves from Maine to Hawaii - Bum Boosa™ Bamboo Baby Wipes are made with 100% non-woven bamboo fiber (described as having a cashmere-like quality) which is renewable, biodegradable, flushable, and in the right facility, compostable. They are made with an all-natural solution including organic aloe vera, purified water, and essential oils.

Their next product is coming out very soon - Bum Boosa™ Bamboo Diaper Rash Ointment is made with zinc oxide, bamboo powder, and a variety of herbs. It is rich but light and a little goes a long way!

One of the cool things about the company is that they plant trees for each package of wipes sold and offset more than 100% of our carbon emissions by planting trees with Trees for the Future. So far we’ve planted more than 5,000 trees!

Check out their website at www.bumboosa.com and if you are interested in making a purchase, let them know. They are currently selling in cases of 6 packages on Amazon but they will sell individual packages too if anyone is interested. If nothing else, please share the word with friends and family!

  • Kappa Iota chapter of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Wins peta2 Award For Holding Fur-Free Formal

Portland, Maine — For the 100 percent fur-free formal that they held on April 25, the women of the University of Southern Maine’s Kappa Iota chapter of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, Inc., have received a Compassionate Chapter Award from peta2, the world’s largest youth animal rights organization. Kappa Iota member Casey Webster and her 13 sorority sisters wore peta2’s anti-fur buttons to the formal and posed for a group photo behind a banner that read, “Fur-Free Formal 2009!”

“Every woman wants to look her best for the spring formal, but the Kappa Iota sisters’ compassion makes them radiantly beautiful,” says peta2 college campaign coordinator Ryan Huling. “By making their biggest social affair of the year fur-free, these women showed that a killer look doesn’t mean killing animals.”

The members of Kappa Iota have received a framed certificate and a thank-you card signed by peta2 staffers.

On April 11th, 2009, Kappa Delta Phi and Kappa Delta Phi NAS celebrated the new sister colony of Kappa Alpha Alpha chapter and new brothers of Alpha Alpha Chapter of the University of Maine at Orono.

Around thirty people were in attendance to welcome in eight new sisters of Kappa Delta Phi NAS, and three new brothers of Kappa Delta Phi. Sisters and one alumni brother from local, and not so local, chapters were also in attendance for the evening which included a catered dinner and a dance. Attendance was slightly hindered due to the holiday weekend, and many brothers and sisters sent their regrets, but the overall spirit of the evening was not affected. Jim Joy, of Eta chapter, came to see his little brother, and meet the new brothers and sisters. Joining to celebrate the new sister colony was Taryn Beaumont, of Kappa Lambda, Sam White, of Kappa Mu, and Mandy Whittier, of Kappa Upsilon, a member of the sister’s National Board who helped in the education process for KAA. All of the Alpha Alpha brothers were in attendance, along with a few of their alumni. New brothers Dave Ouellette, Zachary Chase and Chris Dunbar were formally introduced, as well as the new executive board. Seven of the eight new KAA sisters were able be there, including Hannah Horecka, Stephanie Guillemette, Kayla Smith , Jenny Cohen, Ashley Callan, Kasey Fitch, Taryn Denoncour (Katie Ramirez was unable to attend.) In the future there will be many great things to read about from this amazing group of brothers and sisters, who truly represent the best Kappa has to offer.
