KappaTalk members, actives and alumni, Brothers from Kappa Delta Phi and Sisters from Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority perform community service and have a social.
It was a hot time at the Old Town YMCA.

The KT Meet of `08 brought 30 brothers and sisters from 15 chapters across New England to Old Town, Maine for a large scale philanthropy event that involved giving a fresh coat of paint to several of the YMCA’s large meeting rooms.

Members of Kappa Delta Phi, Inc. and Kappa Delta Phi, NAS took part in the event, held on Sept. 27.

“These rooms encompass the child care program of the YMCA,” said Taryn Beaumont of Kappa Lambda chapter, who organized the project with Samm Stewart of Kappa Eta chapter. “Brothers and sisters devoted their time and energy to this project throughout the day, climbing on ladders and painting everything from walls to bulletin boards to cubbies to make the YMCA look brand new.”

Said Samm: “As brothers and sisters of Kappa Delta Phi, Inc and Kappa Delta Phi, NAS, we pride ourselves on performing philanthropy events such as these, as it is the foundational element on which our organization is built.”

The event was followed by a social event hosted by Jennifer “Veggie” D’Appollonio at her home in Howland, ME. A great time was had by all!

A warm thanks is also extended to YMCA of Old Town for allowing us into their home and supporting us in this project.

by Scott Moody, Alumni Brother of Xi Chapter at Lyndon State, Kappa Delta Phi, for orderofthecrow.org
    kappa_kamping_2008_033

Kappa Kamping was started on the KappaTalk Forums as a “what if” thread, sometime in 2002-2003. The idea was to put together a mellow event that all chapters could attend if they wanted. A few of us got excited about it, started brainstorming, and decided could be done.

The location, in the Central Vermont town of Granville, in the Green Mountain National Forest, was chosen due to it’s out of the way, private nature. The next campsite is quite a distance away, allowing for some privacy and in our case…the freedom to be a tad loud and not bother other campers. Unlike state campgrounds, the camping facilities in the forest are “primitive”, meaning it only has a fire pit, and a privy…pack in, pack out.

Nighttime has brought us a few surprise visitors. On year one, Beth Peavey, Sister of Kappa Nu Chapter at Thomas College, Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, found us at around 10pm in the pitch black…2 miles up a mountain road in Vermont….not bad navigating! There was also my fireworks incident….that’s for another time. The following year, the neighbors from a deer camp up the road came down, shared a beverage or two and played their guitar with us. Year three saw the gay firedancer from the Rainbow Family of Living Light who lost his way; give us a really cool firedancing show. Last year…oh last year…it was Scott Noble (Brother of Tau Chapter at Castle State College) who showed up with salmon steaks, ribs, and chicken breasts!!! Not to mention the quarter barrel that Karen Hall (Sister of Kappa Gamma Chapter at Keene State College, Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority) bought for the weekend.

This year marks the 5th Annual Kappa Kamping. Each year, the event attracts at least one or two new folks with a few of us like Jeffery Willette (Brother of Mu Chapter at UMaine Pesque Isle), Beth Peavey and myself having been to all of them. There are usually around 10-15 campers in the tent city. Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity Chapters represented Alpha, Gamma, Xi, Mu, Rho, Tau, and Eta have been represented at one point or another and sisters of Kappa Nu and Kappa Gamma have represented Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority.

It is a weekend of good food, (we usually hold a pot luck supper on Friday night, and Beth Peavey and I have put on a traditional breakfast on Saturday morning) and good times….the bonfire is always going, there is usually people swimming in the arctic brook nearby, or hiking along the Clark Brook Trail, or just sitting at camp and playing a game of cribbage.

Kappa Kamping is held annually, on Father’s Day weekend, in the Green Mountain National Forest in Granville Vermont, just off Route 100. It’s a weekend of tent camping, smores, radio baseball, and relaxed socializing with fellow KDP folks under the stars… and no better way I can think of to start the summer off right!

The first two Well Balanced Kappas have been awarded to Brother Ryan Barnes and Sister Taryn Beaumont .

Brother Ryan Barnes & Sister Taryn Beaumont - 2008 Well Balanced Kappas.

Brother Ryan Barnes & Sister Taryn Beaumont - 2008 Well Balanced Kappas.

Ryan Barnes, an electrical engineering major at UMaine, maintains a high GPA in a demanding major at a premier university.

Barnes had an extraordinary career as an Active Brother. He pledged at Mu Chapter, UMaine Presque Isle and then transferred to UMaine Orono, the flagship of the Maine University system. Once there he re-founded the dormant Alpha Alpha chapter which is now at 13 men strong. He served as President of Alpha Alpha for the first two years of the chapters rebirth.

Ryan is a member of the UMaine Paintball club member and an IFC Member.

His contributions to campus volunteer efforts and community service are nothing short of amazing.

Tayrn Beaumont is currently a student of the graduate level Physical Therapy school at Husson College. She has been an active sister of Kappa Lambda for three years and is currently President of Kappa Lambda Chapter.

She is a member of the APTA (American Physical Therapist Association) as well as OPTS (Organization of Physical Therapist Students). Through OPTS, she helps to sponsor events such as wheelchair basketball, advertisement of physical therapy awareness month and a dance every year to raise money for a different cause or disease.

These two leaders exhibit the best of a well balanced Kappa showing exemplementary actions in academics, leadership with in kappa, leadership in the college and community and contributions in community service.

We met at couple of locations and then trekked to Chi chapter alumnus, David Jones. Dave Jones was seriously injured a year ago during a skiing accident, but due to his perseverance he has made incredible strides in recovery. This is not surprising as that he has been described as Captain America by his Chi Chapter alumni.

Kappa Chi Alumnus Sister Jill Bivona arranged the community service for Brother Dave Jones. They knew each other during their active days when Dave was an active Brother of Chi chapter and Jill was an active Sister of Kappa Chi, located at Southern New Hampshire University.

The crew of Kappa Delta Phi Alumni Brothers, Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Alumnae Sisters and Active Brothers from our UMaine Colony helped Dave clean sweep his basement, handle some over growth in his yard, and clean swept the upstairs of his house.

While Brother Scott Moody (Xi chapter) and Sister Nicola Reis-Sedgwick (Kappa Chi Chapter) whipped up some serious grub for the hard working teams.

Brother Vinnie DeMambro (Eta Chapter) was the brother of the day, installing two sets of banisters and re-doing an exterior wall and other construction around the house, Brother DeMambro operates a construction company located in Bar Harbor, Maine.

The active brothers of Alpha Alpha colony (with a little help and supervision from alumni brothers from a couple of different chapters) were set to some serious lifting, carrying a lot of heavy weight from the basement to the pickup trucks making runs to the local dump.

Brother Scott Cranston (Nu Chapter) was the master of yard shrubbery and tackled some serious overgrowth. We are happy to report Scott still has all of his digits and did one heck of a job.

The alumna Sisters from Kappa Chi, Kappa Iota and Kappa Eta turned their critical eye to the overflowing wardrobe of Dave Jones and performed a “what not to wear” episode before our very eyes. Once the “what not to wear” episode was over they changed channels to “Flip this house” and they transformed the upstairs into an area any top notch bed and breakfast would be proud to own.

Yard work, Basement and Upstairs transformations and construction being completed we turned our attentions to the food and to wishing Alumni Sister Victoria DeMambro (Kappa Eta) a very happy birthday.

We then broke camp for the day and returned to our assorted hotel rooms to rest and get ready for the evening social.

Kappa Eta Sister Jennifer D’Appollonio secured our evening social at Foreplay Sports Bar in Portland Maine. The Owner of Foreplay Sports Bar is married to Kappa Iota Alumni Sister Chandra Palian. They were extremely gracious hosts to us closing off the upper level for our social.

Kappa Delta Phi Brother and American Army Soldier, Geoffrey Carmichael.

Kappa Delta Phi Brother and American Army Soldier, Geoffrey Carmichael.

This month’s Spotlight on a Kappa is on Geoffrey Carmichael. He is an alumni Brother of the Nu Chapter from Thomas College, Waterville, Maine. His hometown is in Sanford, Maine but now resides in Steilacoom, Washington with his wife Camilla of 1 year. He is a medical lab technician stationed at Fort Lewis with the 47th Combat Support Hospital. He also does church ministry and missionary work at McNeil Island Corrections Center on Sunday evenings. His wife, Camilla, is also in the Army and is a supply specialist and has been in Iraq since last September, but will be coming back within the month. Geoff is expecting to be heading out to Iraq in late 2008.

Geoffrey pledge in the fall of 2003 and was active until he graduated from Thomas College in May 2006. He believes that Kappa chose him because the brothers showed a lot of interest in him, seeing the potential leader he would blossom into being. They didn’t know who the real Geoffrey was until after the interview process. While he was active, he held the position of pledge master and the philanthropy chairman. Geoffrey was also on the Thomas College Lacrosse Team, the college republicans as well as several other organizations on campus. He hasn’t been to a convention yet, but did go to the President Treasurer’s Meeting in the fall of 2004.

Being in Kappa and going through pledging helped him get through basic training. He had two similar situations where a girlfriend broke up with him during pledging for Kappa Delta Phi and another girlfriend broke up with him during basic training. Geoffrey said, “The hardest part in training and pledging was just going through the process and the emotional attachment to someone. The hardships you go through and the bonds you make were most important and the trust that you build with the other comrades.” After Kappa, he had a really life changing experience at his job. It happened at his first autopsy and he realized the full value of life.

Some of the many Kappa past times that people have are just being with their brothers and sisters, Geoffrey loved late night Kappa chants before quiet hours at school and getting together with alumni such at Scott Cranston, Ken Holman and David Alberico. Many brothers and sisters have changed our lives in some way, even if they are a small way. David Alberico is one of those brothers that changed Geoffrey’s life. David met Geoffrey’s mother and made a great lasting impression of a classy gentleman. Cherry Drew is a sister that showed Geoffrey the meaning of having a good time with other Kappa Brothers. Geoffrey tries his best by staying in touch with the actives from Nu Chapter and helps them out if it is financial or even just some brotherly advice.

Something that most people don’t know about Geoffrey is that he is training for a marathon right now and has about 20 pairs of running shoes. I don’t know what obsessive is but that seems like a lot! He loves cookies, doesn’t drink any alcohol, doesn’t smoke and is also an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Saints. I asked Geoffrey what the top three things he wants to do before he got too old. He replied with running ten marathons; after he retires, he wants to go on a church mission with his wife because he didn’t get to do it because of the military and he is married; and to win the Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest by trying to eat 58 hot dogs.

Congratulations Geoffrey on being this month’s Spotlight on a Kappa!

Kappa Delta Phi Brother and Police Office, Keven St. Peter.

Kappa Delta Phi Brother and Police Office, Keven St. Peter.

This Month’s Spotlight on a Kappa is on Kevin St. Peter, alumni of the Eta Chapter. He is 40 years old and he calls home Limestone, Maine. He has been married to his wife, Claudia, for 14 years and has 2 beautiful daughters, Alyssa age 12 and Kelsey age 9. Kevin went to school at the University of Maine, Machias and later joined Kappa Delta Phi in the spring of 1987. He was only there for one semester, but soon traveled up to the University of Maine, Presque Isle. He was a commuter student there and was also involved with the Mu Chapter for a little bit, but did not hold any positions at either chapter. The ideals and the men of Kappa Delta Phi really appealed to Kevin. He had many friends in the other fraternities on campus, but he never really felt chemistry with the others ones due to their different styles of being a fraternity.

Soon after college was over for him, he went to the academy to become a police officer. He spent 12 weeks in the academy and he reflected on Kappa while he was there and used it to get through the academy. Being up at 5am and having every second of the day planned for him until 10pm was a change for him. It was military based and where as other men were in some type of military beforehand, Kevin was coming right out of college. Kappa was a big help as a core foundation for him through the academy because it reminded him of the pledging process that he did with Kappa. Some things that were different for Kevin was the attention to detail, marching, PT in the early morning, breakfast at 7am, room inspections. A lot of physical training was not something Kevin was used to like running three days a week, doing a circuit, and sometimes having classes after supper. The only time he would have free time was when him and some of the guys would play volleyball and that was it.

Kevin has recently had an interest in the outdoors and has started camping with his family. He is a very outgoing person and enjoys concerts every now and then. A game of paintball is another thing that is one of his hobbies. Some of his favorite Kappa past times as an active was going to Kappa Kamp. As an alumni, his new past times are the Greek Games at Eta that he’s attended and Mu Reunion the past few years. Whenever he’s gone on a trip, he’s gotten in touch with brothers in the area and got a bite to eat to catch up.

Being a full time patrolman is a tough and strenuous job. He works all the small departments but is never involved with murders. Most of Kevin’s job enquires him to work on computer crimes, white collar crimes, and financial crimes. Two of Kevin’s most memorable incidents are very touching. On October 8th, 2004 in Caribou, ME, a 13-year-old girl was getting off a school bus right in front of her house. A truck lost control on the road and as soon as the girl got off the bus, she was hit and killed instantly by the truck. At the very same time, Kevin was having a fight with his oldest daughter Alyssa, age 9 at the time, because she had a splinter. The call finally got to Kevin and he was the first on the scene. The second most memorable incident happened with winning a court case. In 2005, a 46-year-old man tried to solicit a 13-year-old girl over the internet and told her parents and they contacted the police about it. At the time, they had a small female police officer and they used her to resemble the girl and caught him when he pulled up at the meeting spot. The case went to a 2-day trial and the jury was out in 7 minutes and found him guilty. He went to jail and was later released and tried to grab a young girl in Fort Fairfield, ME the next day and is in jail now.

Kevin lost touch with a lot of people when he moved back home to Limestone/Caribou, but the Kappa Talk has gotten him connected with people he lost contact with. He plans on going to convention this year for the first time in a long time.

Congratulations Kevin on being this month’s Spotlight on a Kappa!

Kappa Delta Phi Brother Ken Holman, right, and Geotz Bradau

Kappa Delta Phi Brother Ken Holman, right, and Geotz Bradau

The first Spotlight on a Kappa is our own Order of the Crow  website creator Kenneth Holman. Ken is 34 years old and lives in Clifton Park, NY, just 15 miles from Saratoga Springs. He lives with his lovely wife, Stacey, of 6 years and their 2 dogs, Kelsey and Chowduh. Two of the things that are very important to Ken are politics and his faith,. He is also a major fan of the New York Rangers!

Ken went to New Paltz State and joined Kappa Delta Phi in the Fall of 1995. He felt Greek life was not for him until he found Kappa Delta Phi, they were established for only a year at the time, otherwise he would have pledged for them sooner. He liked what Kappa Delta Phi was presenting to him. They had a very good group of core values and they weren’t a huge national fraternity where he’d be lost in the shuffle. What attracted him the most was that Kappa showed a great blue collar New England work ethic. He believes that in the end he chose Kappa and that Kappa chose him.

As Web Technology Coordinator Ken builds inter/intranet pages for his company and fixes things from computers to large networks. Kappa gave a sound education in ways a college education alone could not. Kappa Delta Phi prepared him by teaching him time management, resource management, having interpersonal interactions, planning budgets, and planning events. He feels Kappa prepared him more for the real world than college alone did. Some of his favorite Kappa past times have ranged from being active and as an alumni. The most recent alumni past times include having social meetings, dinner parties, and going to hockey games with fellow alumni. As an active, going on road trips to other colleges and being welcomed in by people that he didn’t know on a first name basis, but had the same ideals and core values as himself is a rewarding experience.

Michael Circe is the brother that has changed a part of Ken’s life. Although Michael is a couple years younger, Ken can see how Michael applies Kappa ideals with his involvement with his family, work and community and this inspires Ken to do the same. As for the sister that has changed his life, Ken said it was the Alpha Class of KAG…all of them. They changed his life because he witnessed all of their hard work and perseverance through the most daunting of times.

As an active, he didn’t hold any positions, but throughout campus he was involved with many activities. He was busy being President of the Resident Hall Association, a member of NRHH, and the Ad Director of the campus newspaper.

Congratulations to Ken Holman for being this week’s Kappa Talk’s Spotlight on a Kappa!
